According to the police spokesperson, 3,500 warning text messages were sent to restaurants, cafes or shopping centers for non-compliance with the veil and 137 of them were closed across the country for recidivism.

The police had announced that new surveillance cameras will make it possible to identify in the street, in cars or in shopping centers, women who do not respect the veil.

SMS warnings are also sent to women who do not wear the Islamic veil and, in the event of a repeat offence, they will be brought before the courts. They will have to pay a fine and will be deprived of certain social services and may be prevented from leaving the country. The car of unveiled drivers could be seized for several weeks.

Since the death of Mahsa Amini in September, arrested by the morality police for not respecting the veil, an increasing number of women do not wear the headscarf in the street as a sign of protest.

Finally, the country’s deputy prosecutor announced that those who encourage women to remove the veil could be sentenced to up to ten years in prison.
