The 17-year-old girl disappeared on Thursday afternoon – but only on Monday was an investigation into suspected kidnapping initiated. Now the police will review their own work on the case.

– It is important to provide answers to the questions that exist, above all from relatives, says Peter Sörstedt at the police.

At 14:30 on Thursday afternoon, the 17-year-old girl was last seen in her life when she left her school. Four days later, she was found dead, just a few minutes’ walk from the school.

On Saturday, the police told Mark-Posten that they did not suspect that a crime was behind the girl’s disappearance – and it took until Monday before a preliminary investigation into suspected kidnapping, which was later reclassified as suspected murder, was started.

– I understand that there are quite a few questions about what the police did from the time the report came in on Thursday, until Sunday evening or Monday when we went into a special incident, says Peter Sörstedt, commanding officer for the police’s special operation.

To be reviewed

Now they are putting all their efforts into the preliminary investigation into the girl’s death, but soon an investigation will be launched to review the police’s own work, says Peter Sörstedt.

– Was there anything we should have done differently? Is there something that we should look at in order to be able to give answers, especially to relatives, about what we did in the first days.

Are there suspicions that things have not gone right?

– No, I don’t want to say that, but as soon as the questions are asked, we must be able to give qualified answers and not just speculate on those parts, says Peter Sörstedt.

“Red herring”

Early in the search, a tracking was made of the girl’s phone, which then indicated that she was in the vicinity of Norrköping.

– It turned out to be a false track and it may have affected our assessment of the case, of course.

It is not yet known when the investigation may be completed. A 17-year-old boy is being held on probable cause on suspicion of murder.
