The shooting range in the I20 area in Umeå is used both by the local and regional police, as well as by the police training in Umeå. For some time, the Police has been working intensively to increase the number of police students, and invested heavily in marketing and recruitment.
– It is unfortunate in the situation we are in, when the volumes increase we have another problem – that we do not have premises, says Pontus Bergh, director of studies at the police training in Umeå.
Fewer police students
How many and whether places will disappear from the police training in Umeå is still unclear.
– It is a risk-taking, if we accept students, we must know that we have premises, otherwise we stand there and affect hundreds of students, says Pontus Bergh.
Right now, the recruitment process is ongoing until spring 2024, and more and more students are being accepted. According to Pontus Bergh, they are closely following the work to solve the lack of premises, to know if they will have to stop the admission of new students.
– I’m quite confident that it will work out, but at the same time it doesn’t feel quite right, says Pontus Bergh.
Temporary shooting modules
Currently, a procurement is underway to build a new shooting facility, but if construction goes ahead, the new facility will not be completed until 2026. That leaves a gap of two years, when they will lose the current shooting house in August 2024. But the work to buy in barracks as temporary shooting galleries are in full swing.
– Our starting point is that we will solve it and we will have temporary shooting halls here in Umeå, says Micael Säll Lindahl.
