The police in Linköping: The new law works – wants to issue more stay bans

At the end of April, Eva Nemec Nordh, chief prosecutor in Linköping, decided on a stay ban in the Skäggetorp district for two men with heavy criminal charges. The law is intended to be used to prevent crime by prohibiting criminal persons from residing in certain designated areas.

– They are connected to criminal groups in Skäggetorp, have such a position that they also have a decisive importance for crime, says Eva Nemec Nordh.

Pretty soon one of the men broke the ban and the police chose to reject the man instead of arresting him.

– I probably mean that arrest in that case would not have been wrong, says the chief prosecutor.

The police: Has had a good effect

The police believe that they are trying their hand at using the new legislation and that the patrol that rejected the man made an assessment that an arrest was not necessary, but only drew up a report.

– We have an example from Gothenburg. There, a person had to violate the stay ban four times before the person concerned was detained, says Ann-Christine Rehnström, local police area manager in Linköping.

The now active stay bans have had a good effect on crime in Skäggetorp, according to the police, and now they are looking at having more issued in other districts.
