The police describe the course of events: “an inferno”

At 12.33, several alarms were received by the police about an ongoing gunfire at the Risbergska school in Örebro.

Just over five minutes after the alarm arrived, the first police patrol arrives and goes directly into the school. Strong smoke development is then reported on the premises. Something that made it difficult for the police to enter school without special protective equipment.

– The police officers who came to the scene talk about what to describe as an inferno. Dead people, injured people, screams and smoke development, says Lars Wirén, police area manager for Örebro County.

The police are being subjected to shooting

Shortly after, the police meet the perpetrator who is armed with what they call a “rifle -like weapon”.

– They perceive that someone is approaching and then being exposed to whom they perceive as shooting, says Lars Wirén.

Lars Wirén describes the shooting against the police as extensive, which made the police work on the scene.

– The police officers who were at the scene have described that they felt that the shooting began to be directed at the police when they stepped in instead of students and staff at the school, he says.

But despite the extensive shooting, no police should have answered the fire.

The intervention force arrives

Just over ten minutes after the police were alerted to the scene, the intervention force arrives and launches a search of the partially smoky premises.

– The school is an extremely large building, 17,000 square meters, a very large area to search, says Lars Wirén.

After just over an hour, the perpetrator is found dead with three weapons next to him and the urgent effort is interrupted.

– A dozen empty magazines are found at the site, next to the deceased perpetrator, a large number of unused ammunition is found, Wirén says.

Rapidly acted in spite of difficult circumstances

But even though the perpetrator was found dead, it was not possible to rule out at the moment that there were no more perpetrators in the school.

– The situation was chaotic, many people running inside the premises and off the premises, Lars Wirén.

But despite the circumstances difficult during the operation, the police believe that they acted quickly.

– In the riot that prevailed inside the school, it was about identifying and disarming a perpetrator and helping injured and saving lives, says Lars Wirén.
