The Uvalde, Texas school district is firing Police Chief Pete Arredondo following the shooting at an elementary school that killed 19 students and two adults. The announcement comes after a time where dissatisfaction with how the police handled the mass shooting simmered after details of the intervention were made clear.

The decision, which was made clear late Wednesday night, was made by a divided board in the Uvalde school district during a meeting where parents and survivors gathered to listen.

Arredondo, who did not attend, is the first to lose his job in the wake of one of the worst school shootings in US history.
