In 2022, more than 150 people died during the Halloween celebration in Seoul, the capital of South Korea.
A South Korean court has sentenced a former police district chief to three years in prison for an accident in which more than 150 people were trampled to death at a Halloween party in the capital, Seoul.
Former police chief of Yongsan District Lee Im-jaen was considered guilty of the failure of the police to prevent a tragedy in a crowd of tens of thousands of young people.
Mainly young people in their 20s and 30s had gathered at the end of October 2022 at the popular entertainment area for the first Halloween party after the corona restrictions were lifted. Tens of thousands of people were crowded into the narrow and steep alleys, with disastrous consequences.
According to the court, the police should have been able to predict the size of the crowd better and act accordingly to regulate the number of people.
The families of the victims have praised the verdict.
Earlier this year, two high-ranking police officers were sentenced to prison for trying to conceal evidence related to the case.
