The police’s national bomb protection was called during Thursday to Bergsjön in Jönköping municipality. A number of bathers had found a suspicious grenade on the lake bed during the afternoon.

– They found something that resembled a military object, which they took ashore, says Johnny Gustavsson, press spokesperson at the police.

After analyzing images, police decided to send their National Bomb Squad to the scene – who chose to detonate the suspected grenade on the spot.

– They became a bit unsure about what type of charge the grenade had, so they took the safe bet, says Johnny Gustavsson.

– It was obvious that it was a grenade, but not what type.

It is unclear how well-visited the beach was, but the police state that no major barrier had to be erected. The police do not suspect any crime in connection with the incident.

– It is basically impossible to investigate this. The grenade had probably been lying on the bottom of the lake for a long time, says Johnny Gustavsson.
