During last year’s politicians’ week in Almedalen, SKR’s psychiatric coordinator Ing-Marie Wieselgren was murdered in the middle of the open street. An act of violence that left no one untouched. With the tragic event fresh in their minds, the police have tightened security in several ways as this year’s almedal week begins on Tuesday.
Tightens security – but no increased threat image
According to Johan Heed, commissioner of the Stockholm Police Region, security at Almedal Week has always been high and there is no increased threat this year. But despite that, the police have tightened security even further.
– We have significantly increased the capacity for camera surveillance this year. And those who are in the Almedal area can count on being approached and contacted by police who work there to a greater extent than before.
“Hope people dare to come back”
The measures are introduced in the hope of bringing back the positive aspects of Almedal Week and to maintain a time, a place and a context in which to conduct democratic political conversations, says Johan Heed.
– I sincerely hope that people dare to come back to Almedalen.
