The live adaptation of this famous anime has been in development at Lionsgate since 2015, and Cretton’s involvement is a major step forward for the development, as noted by The Hollywood Reporter.

When I heard about Destin’s stubbornness, it happened to be right after I saw a blockbuster action film of his, and I thought he would be the perfect director for Naruto. […] After enjoying his other films and realizing that his strength lies in creating solid dramas about people, I came to the conclusion that there is no other director for Naturo. When I actually met Destin, I found that he was an open-minded director who was willing to accept my input and who strongly believed that we could work together in the production process.
