Luka Modric was just seconds away from becoming the big hero.
But was robbed in the very last minute by a late goal from Italy.
Now a picture of the Croatian big star that the whole football world is talking about is spreading.
For a long time it looked as if Croatia would advance to the finals of the football European Championship and that the big star Luka Modric would take on the role of hero. His 1-0 goal against Italy stood well into extra time.
Croatia snubbed
Modric also made history with his lead goal, as it made him the oldest goalscorer in a European Championship of all time. But with the last kick of the match, Italy destroyed and Mattia Zaccagni that story altogether.

The 1-1 goal in the last minute means that there is a minimal chance for Croatia to progress from the group stage as one of the top three. The Croatians were of course saddened and after the final whistle Modric was completely dejected.
The picture of Modric
After the defeat, a picture of the Croatian big star was spread around the football world and it has become a real talking point, see the picture below. Modric was named the best player of the match and poses in the picture with the award, his expression saying everything about how he is feeling.
– It was actually sad to see Luka Modric come by here with the award for the best player of the match. There was no need to give him that, considering how it ended, says the journalist Olof Lundh in TV4.

Luka Modric wasn’t very happy right away either.
– There is a lot of stress. We fought until the end, but unfortunately football is ruthless. Losing like this makes you sad. It’s hard to put into words how I feel, my teammates and our fans too, he told the media afterwards.
