Hundreds of protesters have broken into the heavily fortified Green Zone inside Baghdad’s parliament, reports say Al Jazeera.
According to the newspaper, the demonstrators are mostly supporters of the Iraqi Shia leader Muqtada al-Sadr. The reason is supposed to be a protest against the candidature Mohammed Shia al-Sudani being elected prime minister.
Current Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi called on the protesters to “immediately withdraw” from the Green Zone.
It is not the first time al-Sadr supporters have stormed parliament. In 2016, protesters staged a similar protest, staging a sit-in and issuing demands for political reforms, after then-Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi sought to replace party-affiliated ministers with technocrats in an anti-corruption campaign.
