The jury has returned its verdict. This is Triangle of Sadness by Ruben Östlund who won the festival’s prestigious award. This is the second time the director has received this award.
The Palme d’Or therefore finally went to Ruben Östlund for his film Triangle of Sadness. This is the second time that the Swedish director has received the most prestigious award from the Cannes Film Festival, which he already obtained in 2017 for his film The Square. The prize was awarded this Saturday, May 28 by the jury chaired by French actor Vincent Lindon and composed of Asghar Farhadi, Rebecca Hall, Ladj Ly, Jeff Nichols, Deepika Padukone, Noomi Rapace, Joachim Trier and Jasmine Trinca.
The Grand Jury Prize was awarded to two films ex-aequo. Claire Denis was rewarded for her film The Stars at Noon and Belgian director Lukas Dhont for his feature film Close.
Best Actor Award went to South Korean Song Kang-ho for The lucky stars by Japanese Hirokazu Kore-Eda. Fetish actor of his compatriot Bong Joon-ho, and star of his film ParasitePalme d’Or 2019, he plays in this Kore-eda film a man involved in baby trafficking, who will form a small family of odds and ends around him.
Iranian actress Zar Amir Ebrahimi, who had to leave Iran for France in 2008 following a sex scandal, was crowned the best actress award on Saturday for her role in the thriller Ali Abbasi Mashhad Nights. The actress spoke in Farsi while receiving her award. ” Tonight I feel like I had a very long journey to get here on this stage. (…) a journey marked by humiliation she said, thanking France for hosting her.
The Cannes Film Festival 75th Anniversary Prize was awarded to the brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne for their film Tori and Lokita.
South Korean director Park Chan-Wok received the best director award for his thriller A Decision to Leave.
