Yellowstone: 150 years of National Park
But while the nature footage is undoubtedly pretty to look at, the documentary, originally produced for the FOX streaming service Fox Nation, apparently doesn’t take historical facts so seriously.
Costner documentary vs. US history
As Yellowstone historian Megan Kate Nelson (author of Saving Yellowstone: Exploration and Preservation in Reconstruction America) writes in her Slate review of the documentary series, despite the beautiful images and the charismatic presenter, full of historical untruths.
One should focus on the geologist Ferdinand Hayden, whose work hyped up into a David versus Goliath story Nelson argues that the show is designed for a conservative FOX audience that would rather hear about a single man with a mission as the park’s founder, rather than the more complicated truth that the federal government had much more to do with it.
