The original Brad Pitt smasher finale explained

The genesis of World War Z is one of the most chaotic blockbuster productions of recent years. Creative differences and a screenplay that wasn’t completed on time meant that the entire third act reshot had to become. With that, the budget grew from $190 million to a whopping $270 million.

Attention, follow spoiler!

What was the reason for this drastic measure? The short answer: Studio Paramount and lead actor Brad Pitt was original ending too bleak. The version that ended up in the finished film comes up with much more hopeful tones: In a facility of the World Health Organization, protagonist Gerry manages to develop a virus that makes people invisible to zombies.

World War Z: This is how the zombie action blockbuster with Brad Pitt was originally supposed to end

Actually, something completely different should happen. In the first cut of World War Z, Gerry takes the plane he uses to flee Jerusalem and ends up in Moscow, where there is a harsh regime. Old, weak and sick people are executed. If you can fight, you have to join the military. Gerry will be direct moved in after his income and loses his satellite phone – the only means of contact with his family.

This is followed by a time jump that takes us deep into the Russian winter. A now bearded Gerry cleans a subway tunnel in Moscow with his unit. In this course we would have met the zombie killing weapon Lobo. Also, an important finding: zombies can thrive in the cold don’t move so fast. Finally humans have a chance in the fight against the undead.

Meanwhile, Gerry’s family is stuck in a refugee camp in Everglades National Park in the United States. Karin (Mireille Enos), Gerry’s wife, lives in a relationship of convenience with the unnamed soldier (Matthew Fox) from the beginning of the film who is her primary lover used for sex. When Gerry finds out about this, he does everything in his power to free her. At the end of the film, he and his unit storm the Oregon Coast.

Although from World War Z in the wake of the home theater release Extended Action Cut is out, we’ll probably never see that version of the story. The extended version only contains additional, extended and more brutal scenes that match the plot of the theatrical version.
