What are we talking about?

Two competition days behind, but the medal balance of Finnish skiers looks like a round zero. According to Urheilu’s experts, the beginning has been slow, when the top skiers have failed.

Perttu Hyvärinen skied well and Ville Ahonen to his own level. However, it would have been required Iivo Niskanen, Jasmi to Joensuu, Johanna Matintalo and Joni Mäen successes to make the Scoreboard look a lot more solid, Ville Nousiainen says.

Remi Lindholm too skied the free part of the combined race strongly, but the weak part in the traditional race ate up the results.

– However, it bodes well for the 15 kilometer free race. He may well be close to the tenth place then, if everything goes well, Nousiainen stated.

In terms of skiing, the women’s combined competition is on Saturday’s program. According to Nousiainen, then the Finns’ sled can turn and Kerttu Niskanen open a team medal account.

– In this terrain, the hardy will do well. Kerttu has often been in tough shape.

Who surprised?

There were no surprises on the second day of the Games, as the men’s combined competition went pretty much according to the script.

Norway was just as frighteningly superior as we suspected. If someone didn’t believe Johannes Hösflot to Kläbo or To Pål Golbergso both skied very well, too Calle Halfvarsson showed that he cannot be forgotten in the top fights.

The fact that the top two Simen Hegstad KrügerSjur Röthe ran away immediately after changing skis, might surprise someone, but not experts.

– They are good in combined races because they always do it. They are ready to ski right away, Nousiainen said.

Sports expert Kalle Lassila wondered if Krüger and Röthe’s twitch could surprise the other skiers, because they seemed to take it quite calmly after the change. However, this decided the race.

– I don’t know if they had agreed on the matter alone and had not told Kläbo, the experts laughed.

– However, it was their only place to get an easy break.

Who flopped?

The race organizers of the Planica World Ski Championships have had a lot of anger over the past couple of days, and for good reason.

On the first day, salting didn’t help, the snow was slushy and many athletes fell. The second day saw more crashes in the combined race, one of which took away Arsi Ruuskanen to the hospital.

– There should have been a fence at that point, so that it would not have been possible to get out. It is the organizer’s responsibility that the track is safe, Matias Strandvall said.

Lassila reminded that a skier’s calculation skills save a lot, and the Finns are not the best at this.

– But necessarily in such situations, it’s not even a question of one’s own ski skills, because another skier can cause it to fall. However, it is the responsibility of the organizer to take care of the rehabilitation of difficult corners and safety arrangements, Lassila said.

There were also confusing moments in the combined race, when skiers who were overtaken in the round were flagged out. However, they could not be removed from the track sensibly, instead they remained on the track in their places.

– Then when they were taken off the piste, there was such a mess, a big pile of skiers half on the piste. It felt like no one knew what to do, Lassila stated.

What next?

Will Finland’s medal account be opened today? If Urheilu’s experts are to be believed, then you should already prepare medal coffees.

– At least it’s worth having some chewy coffee ready to get coffee quickly, Lassila assured.

The biggest expectations are directed at Kerttu Niskane, who has been in consistently good shape, but Krista Pärmäkoskea too should not be forgotten.

– The harder the track, the better Kerttu has skied. And there are really hard tracks and terrains here, Lassila said.

Pärmäkoski is a bigger question mark. He can ski at top speed, but his performances have fluctuated more than Niskas’s.

Nousiainen reminds that in the combined competition the first round is quite difficult, before the crowd thins out.

– The first corners and the first 2–3 minutes on this track on the traditional section, the race can fall on it in quite a few respects. Especially Kertun, who has often been bad at calculating corners, should be on his guard in them and immediately get a good top position at the start, so that he does not have to calculate in a group.

On Saturday, the reigning silver medalist of the combined normal hill race will also open his competition window Ilkka Herolawhich, if successful, has seams for medals.
