Five opposition parties have set up a reflection committee on the revision of the electoral code. Their objectives: to organize transparent elections, free from fraud and disputes at the origin of the violence after each ballot. The conclusions of this autopsy of the Gabonese electoral system were presented on Wednesday, April 27. Several sticking points were raised.
With our correspondent in Libreville, Yves Laurent Goma
Shortcomings were noted during the presentation of the analysis of the Gabonese electoral system: the weak representation of the opposition within the electoral commissions, the absence of a ceiling on expenditure, the restrictions on public meetings in the pre-election period, the opacity in the transport and display of the minutes after the ballot…
The report will be submitted to the government and to the Constitutional Court. Guy Nzouba Ndama, president of the Les Démocrates party, hopes that the executive will open a dialogue: “ From the discussion springs the light. I therefore cannot assume that the government can rule out our approach, especially since we all work for Gabon. »
The opposition has also made recommendations. The main ones are the withdrawal of the Ministry of the Interior from the organization of elections, the definition of the role of the army in the electoral process, the capping of expenditure, including for the President of the Republic, who is accused of using the means of the State for its own benefit.
In 2023, Gabon will organize the presidential, legislative and local elections. Time is running out because the law prohibits a modification of the texts during the election year.
