the opposition is considering a single candidacy to face President

In the Comoros, the main groups and political formations of the opposition met on Saturday, February 4, in Moroni, at the invitation of the Ukombozi (“Liberation”) movement. Just one year before the next presidential election, the opposition is seeking to adopt a common position consisting of preventing Azali Assoumani from being re-elected, even if it means presenting a single candidacy.

Through this meeting, the opposition wishes to offer a credible alternative to the current governance, by setting up a single organization headed by a candidate, in order to put an end to the reign of President Azali Assoumani in 2024.

The country is bad »

We consider that the country is really going badly. People are fed up with Azali. Unfortunately, there is no prospect emerging. We are convinced that if the country sees a united opposition, behind someone with a program, people will unite around it, will campaign with it. If we’re not united, we won’t be able to fight on this »explains Idriss Mohamed Chanfi, initiator of the Ukombozi movement.

However, the opposition says it is aware that this union alone will not be enough to prevent Azali Assoumani from running for another term.

We should already be able to accept the idea that the fundamental text we have today is not the right one. We should be able to ensure that these laws, preparing the elections, are reviewed. From there, see how to put in place the conditions for organizing real elections », said Mahamoud Ali Mohamed, president of the National Alliance for the Comoros.

Doubts

Although the main opposition groups participated, some important executives were not invited to this meeting, the first of a long series. This situation therefore casts doubt on the ability of the opposition to be able to present a single candidacy in the 2024 elections.
