Sierra Leone’s Electoral Commission announced the results of the parliamentary elections on Saturday evening, hours after a scathing statement from the main opposition party, the APC. The latter once again denounced the elections “ rigged and announced that he would refuse to participate in the governance of the country. Despite this, the authority in charge of organizing the poll gave the composition of the new Parliament.
It is framed by an important security device that the president of the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone spoke at the end of the day, this Saturday. After the usual thanks, he made no comment on the APC’s rejection of the results. He contented himself with reading the results of the legislative elections at length, after which he took his leave without a word.
It therefore emerges from Mohamed Kenewui Konneh that the ruling party, the SLPP, won 60% of the seats in the new Parliament, with 81 deputies. The APC for its part won 54 seats. But the opposition nevertheless retained the town hall of Freetown, the capital, since its candidate Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr obtained 51.36% of the vote there, according to the Electoral Commission.
Earlier in the day, the APC said ” its non-participation in any level of governance, including the legislature and local councils “. However, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr has announced that she recognizes her election as mayor of Freetown, on the basis of the minutes of 85% of the polling stations, minutes which she undertakes to present to the public within the 48 hours.
