The Olympic Games committee has published an impact study estimating the economic benefits for France at 9 billion euros, spread across three sectors: construction, organization and tourism. Indeed, if we stick to the Choose Paris Region figures, the Olympic Games are off to an encouraging start with a 20% increase in tourist numbers over one year. However, retailers are reporting a drop in their turnover and are lamenting the absence of tourists. Are these Games synonymous with benefits for France? We analyze the situation with Pierre Rondeau, professor of economics at the Sports Management School, specialist in the economics of sport and football, and co-director of the Observatory of Sport and Society at the Jean-Jaurès Foundation.
