The sawmill was in operation between 1867 and 1939. In recent years, the toxic dipping agent pentachlorophenol was used, which was a kind of impregnation to prevent the wood from turning blue when it was lying and drying.
– We clean up contaminated soil from this old sawmill area to improve for the residents in the area and reduce the spread out into Alnösundet, says Astrid Göthe Ålin who is project manager for contaminated land at the City Planning Office.
The third work is being cleaned up
From the 19th century onwards, 19 sawmills have been in use. Nyvik is now the third, and last, work that needs to be cleaned up after Ankarsvik and Karlsvik have done it before.
14,000 cubic meters of land
The contaminated soil must be excavated and sent by ferry to a landfill on Blåberget. A total of 14,000 cubic meters of contaminated soil will be transported away. The shoreline will also be excavated to prevent landslides.
But it is not only the soil that is polluted, the groundwater also shows the influence of dioxins. And all the work is expected to be completed in June 2023.
