In traffic, there is a zero vision, which means that one strives for no one to die or be seriously injured in a traffic accident.
The decision on Vision Zero was taken in 1997 by the Swedish Riksdag and is to be the basis for traffic safety work in Sweden.
The curve on the number of fatal accidents flattens out
An interim target is set for the year 2023 and the aim is to reach a maximum of 133 dead and a maximum of 2,800 seriously injured in road traffic.
In 2023, 229 people died in traffic and now a survey shows that Sweden may have difficulty reaching its interim goal if more is not done. The curve over the number of dead has leveled off since 2019 instead of falling.
– We save lives, but progress is too slow. We and many other actors work systematically with efforts to increase road safety, says Maria Krafft, director of traffic safety at the Swedish Transport Administration in a press release and continues:
– There are many good collaborations between the private and the public, national, regional, local. But it’s not enough.
Several actors must cooperate
In order to reach the goal, several actors must cooperate, both the automotive industry and also the Swedish Police Agency’s traffic monitoring.
The transport companies must also be involved and contribute. Almost half of the fatal accidents in 2023 were work-related.
