The number of PC players reached a new highlight in 2024, even overtakes PS5/Xbox and shows a clear trend

A current investigation shows that the number of PC players continues to increase. It is also interesting which titles are played. Most of them are not new releases.

Which examination is it about? Newzoo is a market research company in the area of video games. Its director, Ben Porter, gave PC Gamer an insight into the results of an investigation that deals with gaming on the PC.

It becomes clear that the number of active players on the PC is still increasing. While around 873 million users gambled with their computer in 2023, the number increases in 2024 to 907 million.

Thus, the PC also overtakes the consoles that come together in 2024 to “only” 653 million users.

Another, exciting aspect of the investigation: mostly older titles are played, and most of them belong to a very specific category of games.

Who needs new games?

Which games are gambled? Newzoo has determined that 92 % of the total playing time flows into titles that are older than two years. In other words: new releases are played significantly less.

67 % of the season is spent with titles that are even six or more years old. No wonder that a trend of recent years has become clear. The keyword is: Live Service. So games that are designed in such a way that you keep your shelf for a long time and get updates regularly. The model is controversial and examples like Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League show that it can fail.

The most popular 5 games of the 67 % playing time are old acquaintances:

  • 7.1 % of the season spend players with Counter-Strike: Global Offensive/Counter-Strike 2
  • 6.4 % with League of Legends
  • 6.2 % with Roblox
  • 5.8 % with Dota 2
  • 5.4 % with Fortnite
  • CS: Go 2 only appeared last year, but since it is based on CS: Go, the game in the study still makes it 1 of the title that are at least six years old.

The numbers show that the Live Service model pays off in some cases. Fans remain loyal to their favorite games for years. New publications have more difficult and, with only 8 % of the season, represent the clear minority. What do you think about it? Do you prefer to play older games with live service approach?
