During week 46 in mid-November, 192 people died with covid-19 in Sweden. In the previous three weeks, the average number of deaths was 120 per week. In its new weekly report, the Public Health Agency, FHM, states that the number of deaths from covid-19 continues to increase.
During week 47, 214 people died with covid-19. Last week 176 people died.
“The spread of infection is still considered to be significant and some infected, especially older people, become seriously ill,” writes FHM in the weekly report.
At the same time, the authority states that the number of new cases and the number of patients in intensive care are at an almost unchanged level. Last week, 2,592 confirmed cases were reported in Sweden, while 30 new patients received intensive care.
Increasing trends in Northern Europe
During yesterday, TV4 Nyheterna spoke with state epidemiologist Magnus Gisslén, who predicted a new peak later in the winter.
– There will be new subvariants that will be able to infect us again. There may be a slowdown and then a new peak again. It is not impossible that there will be an increase later in the season again, but we do not know that yet, he said at the time.
In the weekly report, FHM states that the trends in the rest of Europe (the EU and the European Economic Area vary). In countries in the southern parts of Europe the trends are decreasing, while the countries in the north have an increasing trend.
“Overall for the EU/EEA, an increasing trend is seen in occupancy in inpatient care and deaths,” the report states.
The Public Health Agency urges people in risk groups, people who are older than 65 and people who have not previously been vaccinated to get vaccinated against both covid-19 and influenza.
