Newly approved, Novavax’s Covid-19 vaccine will be distributed overseas as a priority, Emmanuel Macron announced on Thursday. Based on a more traditional technology than that of messenger RNA, the Head of State hopes that he will be able to convince populations hitherto reluctant to vaccinate.
This is one of the interesting features of the Novavax vaccine. Exit the messenger RNA, it uses the much more traditional technology of recombinant proteins.
For this reason, it was immediately proposed to vaccine-hesitant people, worried about the products developed by Pfizer and Moderna. The High Authority for Health had even modified its recommendations in this direction.
First doses around the end of February
It is therefore for these reasons that its distribution will be reserved as a priority for the territories furthest behind in terms of vaccination: the overseas territories. Emmanuel Macron announced it Thursday to elected overseas officials. France will receive its first doses towards the end of February, a little over a million, then 800,000 each week in March. It remains to be seen concretely how all this will be distributed.
Another point was raised during this discussion: the vaccination pass entered into force in Reunion and Mayotte while this is not yet the case in the West Indies and Guyana. The elected officials demanded an additional six months, they did not receive an answer. The calendar will indeed be set in the coming days following local consultations.
