– Jarl Magnus Riiberia nothing stops!
Mikko Hannula atmosphere in ‘s newsroom, when Norway’s Jarl Magnus Riiber flies as much as 153.5 meters. It is a new hill record for Ruka suurmäki. The previous hill record was Halvor Egner Granerudin in possession. The mountain jumping specialist jumped 150.5 meters in Ruka last year.
Ruka suurmäki’s so-called Hill Size point is at 142 meters.
– It’s better that I don’t comment on anything. Let the picture do the talking. An incredible athlete! Sports expert Petter Kukkonen and sums it up a moment later in another succinct way.
– That’s the king of this sport.
Riiber won Sunday’s joint start competition in the Combined World Cup with his jump. Riiber is also known as a very good cross-country skier.
Kukkonen has already praised Riiber’s exceptionality before and during the weekend.
– Riiber is an exceptional talent and an incredibly good athlete. Maybe it’s not even understood how much of a talent he is. In a bigger sport, it could come out even better, Kukkonen described before the start of the competition weekend.
Riiber was naturally happy about his hill record, because he had a tooth cavity from his previous hill performances in Ruka.
– Today I was ready to attack on the hill. I knew I had opportunities for a longer jump than earlier this weekend, Riiber stated to Urheilu.
Great numbers
On Saturday’s hill section, the former head coach of the Finnish national team hit more facts on the counter.
– The power output from the legs is the same as the best hill jumpers. Oxygen intake is 86 milliliters. Riiber has exceptional genetics and a drive to train and succeed. That makes him exceptional, Kukkonen listed.
In an ordinary person, the maximum level of oxygen uptake varies between 35 and 40 in the so-called VO2 max test (ml/kg/min). Earlier this fall, the cross-country skiers of the Finnish national team reported in Ilta-Sanom readings between 80 and 90.
Iivo Niskanen has, according to IS, said publicly a few years ago that he is “a man over twenty”.
However, there must be more to the combined than just durability. That’s what’s fascinating about Riiber.
– It’s hard to understand how Riiber does such a thing in ski jumping despite all the endurance training, Germany Manuel Faisst said in the German media after Ruka’s hill record.
The preparation for the Norwegian season was by no means optimal. He said that he coughed for eight weeks straight because of the rhinovirus in October and November.
The adversities did not stop there. Riiber dislocated his shoulder in Thursday’s reserve competition in Ruka, when he jumped to 145 meters. Nevertheless, Riiber won two of the three races of the season’s opening weekend.
Kukkonen sees Riiber’s genetics as exceptional in how the training takes hold of the Norwegian’s body.
– It is extraordinary how his body receives training in a healthy way, Kukkonen underlines.
A new competition format continues: “Meinasi itself falls asleep”
At the Ruka World Cup, a new competition format for the World Cup called individual compact was introduced over the weekend. Its competition format has been thought to limit Riiber’s superiority, because after the hill section the differences are significantly smaller than with the Gundersen method. It was the only competition that Riiber lost.
Riiber also believes that there have been attempts to limit his superiority. Ultimately, the Norwegian doesn’t feel that slowed him down this weekend.
– I could have won that race too without small mistakes. Of course, its fairness raises questions. I liked today. It’s a show when we jump at the end, Riiber told Urheilu on Sunday.
In the new competition format, the differences for the skiing section are based on the rankings, not on the points obtained from hill performances. Individual compact has received a warm reception in sports circles.
Finland’s head coach Antti Kuisma welcomes new forms of competition.
– According to the public, athletes and everyone else, Friday’s competition was interesting. There was a buzz and a different atmosphere compared to Saturday’s normal competition. Then you thought you would fall asleep yourself, Kuisma described.
Sports expert Tommi Nikunen suggested that the individual compact should compete every time in suurmäki in the future. There would be traditional Gundersen competitions in Normalimäki.
The head coach of the national team liked the proposal.
– On a small hill, the compact race doesn’t make such a big difference. It was also visible in the summer gp in this competition format. On a big hill, more of these races would be needed, Kuisma described.
