Sturla Holm Lægreid burst into tears in an interview with NRK when she told about the “accidental shooting” that happened on Friday. Johannes Thingnes Bö assured that the team will support him.
Sturla Holm Lægreid received a penalty from the International Biathlon Union when a charge was forgotten in his gun and he shot with it in the Norwegian team’s dry shooting at a hotel in Lenzerheide.
Lægreid was given by the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation for NRK an interview in which she burst into tears.
– This is sad, but what happened happened, he said after gathering himself first.
– We operate in a sport that can take a human life. That’s why all security breaches must be taken very seriously. Now such a thing has happened, and I humbly accept all the consequences that come from it.
Lægreid received a disciplinary penalty for the incident, and he was not allowed to compete in Sunday’s joint start race. In addition, an investigation has been launched with the Swiss authorities.
Lægreid’s teammates said they heard a gun go off. At first they didn’t understand where the sound was coming from, but they immediately understood how serious the situation was.
– I have heard that this has happened before, maybe 15 years ago the last time. I don’t think that will happen, Lægreid’s roommate Johannes Dahle said to NRK.
– We immediately understood the seriousness of the situation, but no one was close to being hurt, Juni Arnekleiv assured.
The Norwegian team later met to deal with the situation. Among other things, they talked about what happened and how something similar could be prevented from happening. Ingrid Landmark Tandrevold said what happened as a wake-up call to all biathletes.
– A biathlonist’s worst fear is that he shoots a gun when it was not planned for, Tandrevold said.
Johannes Thingnes Bö said the whole team supports Lægreid, in the situation.
– He is a sensitive guy, and you can see that he is not well now. We will take care of him, Bö assured.
