It’s the commotion in France to fight the fires favored by climate change this summer. In total, at 21 July, the two fires still in progress in Gironde have already burned more than 20 800 hectares of forest since July 12. It is nearly four times the area of Bordeaux. The main sector affected is that of Landiras (south-Gironde), about forty kilometers south of Bordeaux ; the second that of Teste-de-Buch (Arcachon basin), at the foot of the Pilat dune. Nearly 37,000 people have already been evacuated. The images on site are striking.
This photo provided by Gironde firefighters (SDIS 33) shows a forest fire near Landiras, in southwestern France, on Saturday July 16. Strong winds and hot, dry weather then thwarted the efforts of firefighters to contain an XXL fire in the pine forests of the Bordeaux region. One of many burning fires across Europe in recent days.
