the night curfew extended in Martinique until next Monday

In Martinique, the curfew established five days ago is extended until October 21. This is what the prefecture announced this Monday, October 14 while the tensions shaking the island seemed to be decreasing according to the authorities themselves. This curfew was introduced in this department of the Antilles after urban violence on the sidelines of mobilizations against the high cost of living.

The ban on driving between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. will continue for at least a week. The prefecture of Martinique announced it Monday October 14. However, earlier in the day, the same authorities estimated that tensions had fallen over the last 48 hours, that roadblocks were gradually being lifted and that the cleaning of roads damaged by social protest was continuing.

The Martinique academy was also considering the gradual reopening of schools from this Tuesday in almost all primary schools and on a case-by-case basis for middle and high schools. But tensions nevertheless continue around the negotiating table. The State, mass distribution and consumer defense associations were to meet for the 7th time this Tuesday. But in the absence of new proposals before Tuesday midnight: the discussions risk being canceled.

These discussions concern the signing of an agreement on lowering prices. Twenty-four points out of the 26 set by local stakeholders have already been covered since September 5. But there are two that remain stuck: the list of product families affected by the price drop, and the difference in prices including tax between the France hexagonal and Martinique.

The RPPRAC, the Rally for the Protection of Afro-Caribbean Peoples and Resources, says it refuses to give in to private interests and intends to continue its mobilization against the high cost of living. The unions announced that they would renew their strike notice this Tuesday.
