Godzilla Minus One was characterized by its brutal destructiveness intertwined with serious drama. This all happened with the help of an innovation in the Japanese series. It was the first Japanese Godzilla film to be set entirely in an earlier historical period. Minus One took place in the years following Japan’s defeat in World War II, even before Ishirô Honda’s classic Godzilla, the first film in the long-running series, which was released in 1954.
At the time of this article it is not yet known what the new Godzilla film will be about. There is a lot to choose from. A direct sequel is conceivable, which continues to tell the fate of the former kamikaze pilot Kōichi Shikishima (and lets him meet the king of the kaiju again).
Or an appearance of Godzilla in another historical period that was momentous for Japan’s development. The combination of the post-war era and the atomic lizard’s landfall set Godzilla Minus One apart from the American MonsterVerse films, which were focused on fun and destruction and which had continued the Godzilla legacy in the meantime. Not that Godzilla Minus One is lacking in monster action…
