Rennes, Paris, Lille… Anti-RN demonstrations are being organized before the second round of legislative elections which could see the far-right National Rally (RN) in power.
Following the announcement of the RN’s historic score in the first round of the legislative elections on Sunday evening, where Jordan Bardella’s camp won more than 33% of the votemany protesters took to the streets to say no to the far right. In Paris, the mobilization against the National Rally took place at République, in the presence of representatives of the NFP. “The New Popular Front is the only one capable of beating the RN,” declared representatives of La France Insoumise. The parties of the left-wing coalition called for a “republican front” against the extreme right, declaring that they would withdraw their candidacies in the second round in the event of a three-way race with an RN candidate.
On Sunday evening, other spontaneous demonstrations broke out in Nantes, Lille and Rennes. In Nantes, anti-fascists marched for more than two hours in the city centre. In Avignon, nearly 200 people gathered spontaneously in front of the town hall an hour after the results of the legislative elections. There is no doubt that before the decisive second round of the legislative elections on 7 July, new demonstrations will be planned in the big and small cities of France, like the weeks that have passed since the announcement of the dissolution of the National Assembly. An anti-RN demonstration in Paris at Place de la République, when is the next one?
This Sunday, June 30, 2024, some 8,000 people gathered at Place de la République in Paris, according to police figures, chanting “Youth screw the FN”. La France Insoumise (LFI) was present with its leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon who spoke around 10:30 p.m. Figures from the Young Ecologists and the Socialist Party were also present. No incidents were reported. The next rally has not yet been announced.
A spontaneous anti-RN demonstration in Nantes
Shocked by the results of the far-right leading the first round of the legislative elections, several hundred demonstrators gathered in the streets of Nantes on Sunday evening. The demonstrators, including the singer Zaho de Sagazan, chanted slogans such as “Siamo tutti antifascitti” in the streets.
An anti-RN demonstration broke out in Lille, supervised by the CRS
A demonstration against the far right broke out in Lille this Sunday, June 30, after the RN won the legislative elections. Dozens of people chanted “Justice fucks the National Front” as they marched down Rue Faidherbe, surrounded by CRS officers. The demonstration took place without any disturbances.
Wild mobilization against the RN in Lyon
In order to protest against the RN’s score, demonstrators created barricades and fired mortars at the police who responded with tear gas grenades, according to La Voix du Nord.
Is there a new demonstration against the RN in Rennes?
Some 300 demonstrators gathered at Place Sainte-Anne in Rennes on Sunday evening when the results were announced. Anti-fascist chants were heard. Only a few trash can fires caused disturbances, which were quickly extinguished by the police, who evacuated the square.
A new demonstration is planned this Tuesday July 2, 2024 at 18 hours, on the Esplanade de Gaulle against “the reactionary, racist and anti-Semitic ideas” of the National Rally, at the call of the inter-union (CFDT, CGT, FO, FSU, Solidaires, Confédération paysanne, Unsa).
