The new zombie MMO shows a chic trailer, but it looks familiar to fans of GTA 5

After a long period of silence, the upcoming zombie MMO The Day Before is back on Steam, including a release date and a new trailer. It looks pretty good, but some players have now noticed a suspicious resemblance to an old GTA 5 trailer.

What’s the deal with the trailer? The highly anticipated zombie MMO The Day Before suddenly disappeared from Steam in January 2023 after apparently having problems with the naming rights. At the end of October, the developers reported back with a release date and a new trailer that raised hopes among fans.

However, some Reddit users noticed a striking similarity to the GTA 5 gameplay trailer from 2013.

GTA 5 rethought?

What bothers the players? On November 1, a user on Reddit noticed a striking similarity between the new trailer for The Day Before and a gameplay trailer for GTA 5. The user “PainComplex” shared both videos saying that the script and the narrator were almost identical.

In fact, the narration voice sounds very similar in both trailers. Both also talk about “reimagining” something. Ironically, The Day Before’s trailer mentions several times how unique the game is.

For comparison, we have included the gameplay trailer for GTA 5 here:

How is this discussed? Quite different. Some Reddit users are of the opinion that the developers of The Day Before were at least inspired by GTA 5. However, not everyone finds that too tragic, after all, the marketing of GTA 5 was extremely successful.

Some see no more similarity between the trailers than between other gameplay trailers, while others accuse the developers of having copied other games several times.

We have put together some comments for you here:

  • “Their logic was probably ‘Wow, GTA 5 sold a lot of pre-orders, it must be marketing. Let’s copy that.’” (via Reddit)
  • “Okay, I watched the first few minutes of both trailers and I’m not entirely sure what you’re talking about. They have similar styles, yes, but so does every other gameplay trailer.” (via Reddit)
  • “You can watch previous trailers [und sehen,] how they copy trailers like The Last of Us and Call of Duty shot for shot. So it was definitely their intention to copy GTA with this one.” (via Reddit)
  • Overall, the new trailer seems to reinforce the feeling among users that something is wrong with the game. Many are now looking forward to the release – if only to see whether a game will actually be released on the deadline, December 7th.

We have asked developers Fnastic for a statement regarding player concerns and will include it here as soon as we have it.

Do you see any similarity between the trailers and if so, does that bother you? Are you looking forward to the release of The Day Before? Please let us know in the comments.

Overall, 2023 is a rather mixed year for survival fans. Some survival hopes were postponed to 2024, including ARK 2. Instead, fans got ARK: Survival Ascended and that too has problems:
