The US Senate voted overwhelmingly on Wednesday in favor of a new bill that guarantees nearly $900 billion annually to the Defense Department.
The House of Representatives already approved the bill last week. Next, the bill will go to the White House, where President Joe Biden is expected to sign it into law.
The appropriations directed to the defense forces under the new law cover, among other things, the procurement of ships, aircraft and weapons. The bill also includes provisions that increase the competitiveness of the United States in relation to geopolitical rivals such as China and Russia.
In addition, the 1,800-page bill promises larger-than-usual pay raises for military personnel and billions of dollars for military housing, schools and child care centers.
