The new trend: Criminals with mouth guards are defrauding the elderly

– I want to make it clear once again that if someone calls you and starts talking about unpaid invoices, orders for gadgets, bank numbers, card numbers, hang up, says Mikael Månsson, head of fraud investigations at the regional level.

Many cases in a short time

Of the ten new cases that the police region received recently, two occurred in Katrineholm, one in Nyköping and one in Eskilstuna.

The police describe that in some cases the fraudsters succeed in the crimes, despite the fact that the victim knew not to trust someone pretending to be, for example, the police. One of these cases took place in Eskilstuna.

– The plaintiff has met two fraudsters who said they were police officers. Before the person lets these two in, the person says the police said not to do that. But then the fraudsters show a police badge plus some kind of police clothing, so the plaintiff thinks it’s the police she’s letting in. It later turns out that in addition to the plaintiff handing over his bank card, the fraudsters have also stolen jewellery, says Mikael Månsson.

Mouth guard – a strategy

In the reports that the police have received during the last one, it is noticeable how the use of mouth guards during the frauds has become common.

– No one in their 80s and 90s reacts to walking around with a mouth guard today. So it has become like another type of masking that they use because of the pandemic, says Mikael Månsson.
