A new trend on the app Tiktok involves asking other users to point out flaws in one’s appearance. The trend has now received a lot of attention and has been met with strong criticism.
– It is very symptomatic of the times we live in, says fashion scientist Emily Dahl.
The clip, which goes under the hashtag “blindness”, has hundreds of thousands of likes and thousands of comments. Tiktok users post clips of themselves and ask others to suggest improvements to their appearance.
– We live in a shaking world and then it’s nice to feel that you can influence something small and simple like your own appearance, says Emily Dahl.
It all started with Tiktok users finding pictures of themselves from five to six years ago. The time when thick marked eyebrows were fashionable – something many today call “eyebrow blindness”. With that as a starting point, people began to ask themselves the question of what one’s blind spot is today.
– People ask “what is my blindness today?” So I don’t look like I did five years ago,” says the fashion expert.
“Can lead to complexes”
The tips have now escalated and the comment fields under these clips are filled with various suggestions for improvement – like getting a nose job or changing hair color. Even if the people in question deliberately expose themselves to this, Emily Dahl believes that there are risks with the trend.
– They open doors to receive criticism which in the long run can lead to complexes. Then you must not make your mistakes and develop your identity properly. I think that could become problematic in the future, says Emily Dahl.
