The new The Crow had to overcome 1000 obstacles

Some films deserve respect just for their staying power. The fantasy reboot The Crow is one such case: it took 16 years since the first Variety report for the new version of the cult film of the same name to hit cinemas. Now it’s here. Was all that preparation worth it?

Fantasy remake The Crow receives many negative reviews

The Crow revolves around the young criminal Eric (Bill Skarsgård), who is killed along with his girlfriend Shelly (FKA Twigs) by killers led by the mysterious Vincent Roeg (Danny Huston). But his grief and love are so great that he returns as an avenger: guided by a mystical crow, he seeks to kill his murderers.

In the 16 years since the first reports, the reboot has received to overcome countless problems. Actors and directors changed countless times, and development was also slowed down by legal disputes. Many people expressed concerns early on about whether such an unstable production could lead to a satisfactory result.

Last but not least, the original The Crow from 1994 is also the last film by actor Brandon Lee, who tragically died during filming. Alex Proyas, the director of the first film, has therefore blocked any reboot ambitions and, according to Variety, has nothing but scorn for the new version. He is not alone.

The reviews of the film have recently been published and paint a predominantly negative picture. It is shocking how pathetic the reboot is, judges the Guardian in a particularly scathing text.

Not a direct hit, but not an unbearable failure either“, explains Variety. The film has a 22 percent critic rating and a 64 percent audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

A lack of creativity in the story is often criticized. Viewers can now find out in the cinema which reactions are justified.
