The past week has seen major changes in the weather worldwide. Of course, the catastrophic earthquakes in Turkey and Syria have received the most attention. The rescue work and the human suffering have also been made more difficult and intensified by the fact that the temperature at night has dropped to minus 15 degrees. – It is terribly difficult in the affected areas, says Madeleine Westin, meteorologist at TV4 Nyheterna. At the same time, South America has experienced weather extremes in the form of landslides and torrential rain in Peru, while Chile and Argentina have been hit by an extreme drought with the result that huge forest and grass fires raged and thousands of people had to flee their homes. A little further north, in the USA, a new cold record has been measured. At the weather station in Mount Washington in the state of New Hampshire it was minus 47 degrees, which combined with strong hurricane winds meant a chill effect of upwards of minus 80 degrees – worst ever. – The average temperature here was lower than on Mars last week, says Madeleine Westin.
