A little outside Södertälje, at the Hallanstalten, some of Sweden’s worst criminals sit. Soon they will be joined by another 120 convicted men, several of them with very long prison terms. – We get more seats in the highest security class. The Correctional Service is in a situation where we are expanding throughout the country in order to fulfill the mission we have, says Martin Holmgren, Director General of the Correctional Service. When serious violent crimes increase, the Correctional Service must be expanded – and remodeled. In 2022, room was made for 400 new criminals in institutions around the country, but it is not enough to cover the needs. The situation is strained. – We are in an extremely difficult situation. We are doing things today that would have been unthinkable four or five years ago. You can share rooms to a fairly large extent, even in institutions that are not as nice as Hall, says Martin Holmgren. The new rooms at Hallanstalten are eleven square meters in size and have room for two prisoners who are allowed to sleep in bunk beds with gallon mattresses.
