Two new skaters take their place in the Swedish men’s national team, but Alvar Myhlback is not one of them.
The 18-year-old cross-country talent will instead be chasing a place at the World Ski Championships in 2025 as part of the junior team.
– But he will probably be able to participate in some A national team camps, says national team manager Anders Byström.
Alvar Myhlback is back in traditional skiing, but the 18-year-old talent doesn’t quite get a place in the Swedish A national team yet.
Myhlback, who focused mainly on long-distance running last winter, has been selected for the Swedish junior national team ahead of the 2024–25 season.
– He is still a junior and not even a final year junior. But we have talked about him being allowed to participate in some A national team camps to get a good exchange there. Alvar is well advanced in terms of training so it will be a good win-win situation for both him and the team, says Sweden’s national team manager Anders Byström during Thursday’s squad presentation.
Myhlback’s success
Byström also does not rule out that Myhlback can join the Swedish squad for the upcoming season’s big highlight: the Senior WC in Trondheim 2025.
– It’s great that Alvar wants to participate and invest in traditional skiing again. He has junior world championships and maybe senior world championships here this winter as well.

In December last year, Myhlback got the chance in the World Cup for the first time. There he has not yet achieved any top positions, but he also made a big impression in the long-distance cup, where the somewhat sensational third place in the Vasaloppet stood out in particular. Myhlback also won two golds at the Junior WC in Slovenian Planica earlier this year.
Nobbar national team
However, another great skiing talent is missing. Elsa Tänglanderwho has won international gold medals at the junior level in both cross country and biathlon, was offered a spot on the junior team, but has turned it down.

Otherwise, there were few big surprises in the squads. The high-class Swedish women’s team is exactly the same as last year, while on the men’s side there were two changes among the sprint specialists. Marcus Grate and Anton Persson has fallen out of the A national team in favor of Oskar Svenssonwho is back after being poked last year, and Emil Danielssonwho is participating for the first time.
– This is what you’ve dreamed about since you were little. There are many who fight for these places. I will show them that I deserve it, says Emil Danielsson.
