The new Netflix stars look similar to their cartoon role models

Avatar: The Lord of the Elements launched on Netflix on February 22, 2024. As a live-action remake, the series brings with it a brand new cast who bring the characters from the original series Avatar (2005-2008) to life. But was the jump from animation to live action film successful? Everyone has to find out for themselves when watching. Avatar Aang

The young Aang (Gordon Cormier) is the titular Lord of the Elements in the Netflix series. However, after 100 years in ice sleep, the last airbender still has to learn to master the elements of water, earth and fire.

Katara

Katara (Kiawentiio) is a teenage waterbender of the Southern Water Tribe in Avatar. She and her brother Sokka discover Aang and join his mission against the Fire Nation as friends and allies.

Sokka

Katara’s older brother Sokka (Ian Ousley) from the Southern Water Tribe has no taming skills, but helps the Avatar out with his wit and fighting skills.

Prince Zuko

Prince Zuko (Dallas Liu) is the son of Fire Lord Ozai, but was banished by the tyrannical ruler of the Fire Nation and now hopes to restore his reputation by capturing the Avatar.

Uncle Iroh

Traveling by Zuko’s side is his loving one Uncle Iroh (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee). The Fire Lord’s brother has left his fighting past behind him and would like to lead his nephew onto a more peaceful path.

Some characters who don’t appear in every episode of the Avatar series, but still have important supporting roles, were also prominently cast in Netflix’s fantasy remake.

Fire Lord Ozai

Fire Lord Ozai (Daniel Dae Kim) is the big antagonist in Avatar. He is the king of the Fire Nation and subjugates the other continents. In addition to his rejected son Zuko, he also has a daughter: Azula.

Azula

Azula (Elizabeth Yu) is Zuko’s much more ruthless sister, who finally wants to prove to her father, the Fire Lord Ozai, what potential she has.

Zhao

Commander Zhao (Ken Leung) is a Fire Nation military leader who will stop at no cost to rise and gain more power. Even if he has to outdo Prince Zuko in the search for the Avatar.

Jee

Lieutenant Jee (Ruy Iskandar) As a Fire Nation soldier, he is less noticeable at first glance. But the officer is often at Zuko and Iroh’s side, even if he has yet to discover the prince’s advantages.

Guest stars: These important Avatar characters stop by Netflix briefly

Some characters only grace Netflix’s avatar in a few individual episodes. Since these are well-known fan favorites from the animated Avatar series, they cannot be missing from this comparison.

Earth King Bumi

King Bumi (Utkarsh Ambudkar) is an old friend of Aang, who is now an old man after the Avatar’s 100-year sleep. Nevertheless, the earthbender still has enormous powers.

Suki

Kyoshi warrior Suki (Maria Zhang) shows Sokka on their island that he still has a lot to learn from fighting. At the same time, romantic sparks fly between the two.

June

June (Arden Cho) is a bounty hunter in the world of Avatar and paralyzes her victims with the tongue of her mount Nyla.

Princess Yue

Princess Yue (Amber Midthunder) is the ruler’s daughter of the Northern Water Tribe, who was saved as a sick child by the spirits of the moon and the sea. She and Sokka become romantically closer.

Gran Gran

Sokka and Katara’s grandmother Gran Gran (Casey Camp-Horinek) Her real name is Kanna and she is a wise woman from the Southern Water Tribe.

Hakoda

Hakoda (Joel Montgrand)
is not only the leader of the Southern Water Tribe, but also the father of Sokka and Katara, whom they meet again in the north.

Faucet

Rooster (Joel Oulette) is Princess Yue’s fiancé and therefore Sokka’s rival for her love. He is also a strong warrior of the Northern Water Tribe.

Arnook

Arnook (Nathaniel Arcand) is the leader of the Northern Water Tribe and father of Princess Yue. Although he is not a waterbender, he still commands great respect.

The Mechanic (Sai)

The Mechanic (Danny Pudi) is an inventor and tries to make ends meet with his son Theo. While in the animated series Avatar he resides in the Northern Air Temple, Netflix relocated him to the Earth city of Omashu and gave him the name Sai.

Theo

Teo (Lucian River Chauhan) is the son of the mechanic. He sits in a wheelchair, but has regained his freedom of movement thanks to his father’s inventions.

Master Pakku

Master Pakku (A Martinez) is a powerful waterbender of the northern tribe in Avatar, but has rather backward views when it comes to teaching female benders.

Gyatso

Monk Gyatso (Kay Siu Lim) was his mentor in the Air Nomads before Aang’s cryosleep. The humorous airbender was also friends with his previous incarnation, Avatar Roku.

Avatar Roku

Avatar Roku (CS Lee) was the last incarnation of the Avatar before Aang and belonged to the Fire Nation.

Avatar Kyoshi

Avatar Kyoshi (Yvonne Chapman)
was the penultimate incarnation of the Avatar before Aang and belonged to the Earth nation.

Avatar Kuruk

Avatar Kuruk (Meegwun Fairbrother) was the third to last incarnation of the Avatar before Aang and belonged to the Water Nation.

The cabbage dealer

He may not have a real name, but he is the cabbage dealer (James you) an institution for fans. His avatar exclaims “My cabbages!” (“My Cabbages!”), when his vegetables repeatedly become collateral damage, is legendary. Even in animated form he was voiced by James Sie.

Appa

Appa is a Sky bison. The massive but gentle beast is not only Aang’s flying mount, but also his good friend. Like Momo, he is played or spoken by Matthew Yang King.

Momo

Momo is the flying lemurwho joins Aang and his friends on their journey as a cute friend and pet.

Nyla

Nyla is the unusual mount that bounty hunter June rides. She belongs to the species of Shirshu. This means she has an excellent sense of smell and can paralyze others with a touch of her tongue.

Koh

Even scarier is coming Koh, the face snatcher (originally spoken by George Takei), hence. He is an ancient spirit who, as a massive spider-like caterpillar, does exactly what his nickname suggests.

Wan Shi Tong

Wan Shi Tong (voiced by Randall Duk Kim) in Avatar is a powerful ancient spirit full of wisdom who takes the form of a large owl and should not be angered.

In addition to the well-known characters from the Avatar template, the remake also adds new characters, such as Suki’s mother Yukari (Tamlyn Tomita). Hopefully, if Netflix orders season 2, we can also look forward to seeing more beloved staff like earthbender Toph.
