The new Heist of Money series belongs to Berlin and that’s not the only change

Two years ago, the Spanish hit series Money Heist ended on Netflix. The story of the professor’s (Álvaro Morte) criminal crew, which first robbed a banknote printing company and then the National Bank, became an international surprise success. The streamer then followed up the first two seasons with three more self-produced seasons. But the series finale in season 5 was not a final farewell to all the characters.

The most unpredictable gang member, Andrés de Fonollosa (Pedro Alonso), became a fan favorite in Money Heist. Starting tomorrow, the criminal will tell his own story in the form of an earlier robbery. The new Netflix series bears his famous alias: Berlin.

Last year, Netflix released the series remake Money Heist: Korea. But the Asian new edition of the Spanish hit was disappointing across the board. Berlin should now save the criminal universe. This time, the focus of the series is Pedro Alonso’s career criminal, who actually died in season 2, but returned in many flashbacks in later seasons. His final return to life is possible because the series is set in Berlin long before Money Heist.

The temporal classification as a prequel is not the only one Change from Money Heist. This time it is no longer Álvaro Mortes’ professor, but rather Berlin himself who is the mastermind of his operation – with a well-coordinated, completely new crew, which includes, among other things, a shy technician (Michelle Jenner) and a loyal son replacement (Julio Peña). Their ambitious raid takes them to Paris, where Berlin looks like a magician 44 million euros in jewels want to make disappear. Money thefts are a thing of the past. And the French capital as a setting is also new.

But Berlin needs one again for its coup Multi-step plan, who leads the gang with crazy moves into the house of a goblet collector, under the bed of a dog owner and into the basement of a church. Of course, not everything always goes according to plan. Especially not when Berlin falls head over heels in love with the wife of a victim who was spied on. But what is more important: love or money?

Netflix’s Berlin sticks to the Money Heist recipe despite deviations

What the trailer for the Money Heist spin-off promised is already confirmed in episode 1: The prehistory Berlin gets its bearings close to the tone of the original series. The unifying element is of course the eternally criminal title character. But the crazy twists and turns in carrying out the raid and the passion of the Spanish gang members, which often complicates everything, are also very reminiscent of the original. Which is perhaps also due to the fact that Money Heist’s series creator Álex Pina has his fingers in the game again – this time together with co-creator Esther Martínez Lobato (Vis a vis).

When you look at the new Heist, you sometimes almost wonder whether Berlin isn’t copying Netflix’s recipe for success a little too closely. Because for new team Also include Damián (Tristán Ulloa) as a real professor this time and Bruce (Joel Sánchez) as a not-so-bright head for rough things who is reminiscent of Denver (Jaime Lorente).
