the new government facing the thorny question of the budget

The new year has not erased the main French problems, starting with the budget. In his wishes, President Macron calls on the parties to find compromises for the finance bill while calling for attention to public finances. Even if he has no real influence on the debates to come, this recalls the thorny equation that Prime Minister François Bayrou is faced with at the start of the year.

The new Minister of the Economy, Éric Lombard, did not wait until 2025 to prepare the budget. Since Monday, he has been consulting the political forces of the Assembly, including the RN and its allies, reports Raphael Devolve from the RFI political department.

While the Barnier government, its 40 billion in savings and 20 billion in new taxes, was censored on a financial project deemed unfair by the left and recessive by the far right, in 2025, the equation is the same .

What route can be found to try to get France’s accounts out of the red without being censored? Should we give pledges to the New Popular Front or to the National Rally?

A vote by mid-February?

One thing is certain, the new government, unlike the previous one, does not want to appear too narrow-minded. But consultations cannot last forever and time is running out.

Due to censorship, it is for the moment the 2024 budget which applies, i.e. a deficit estimated at more than 6% of GDP, still further from the 5% envisaged for 2025 by Michel Barnier.

François Bayrou, who has long been a champion of budgetary rigor, assures that he can complete the budgetary sequence in mid-February.
