Akerman wants to make the feeling of time palpable, while the smallest deviations from Jeanne Dielman’s everyday life have the effect of dramatic break-ins. With many plan sequences and excruciating detail the life of this housewife, mother and prostitute becomes a portrait of a lost soul who wants to escape the devastating standstill with strictly controlled processes. Accompanying them for more than three hours becomes an enriching cinematic borderline experience.
