Every ten years, the well-established film magazine Sight & Sound publishes a major Top 100 Greatest Movies of All Time. Over the past few decades, there have been two recurring favorites in particular: Vertigo – From the Realm of the Dead and Citizen Kane. However, the new list comes up with a completely different number 1.

Jeanne Dielman made it to number one in the latest edition of the Sight & Sound list. The 200 minute epic by Chantal Akerman, released in 1975 and considered a groundbreaking film, we follow a woman and her daily routines over the course of three days. It is a touching and harrowing portrait.

The Sight & Sound list has been chosen for 70 years. Akerman is the first female director to make it to the top. In the current survey, over 1600 people from the film sector Voted. In addition to the surprising number 1, many familiar films from the past decades can be found in the list.
