The company specializing in facial recognition has collected a database of billions of facial images from the internet.
The Dutch data protection authority has imposed a 30.5 million euro fine on the US company Clearview AI, says Dutch public radio NOS.
According to the official, an artificial intelligence company specializing in facial recognition has compiled an illegal database with billions of pictures of people.
The images have been retrieved from the internet, and with them it is possible to identify people from, for example, security camera images.
Intelligence services and security authorities use Clearview AI’s database. Any person with a picture on the internet can end up in the database.
According to Clearview, it only offers services outside the EU, but has previously revealed that, for example, the Dutch authorities have used the company’s database.
It is unclear whether the company intends to pay the fines imposed by the data protection authority. In the past, it has failed to pay fines imposed by France, for example.
Last week, the Dutch data protection authority also imposed a fine of 290 million euros on the American company Uber, because Uber illegally handed over the personal data of its drivers to the United States.
