The national skiing team’s attack on the Sports Gala – after Ebba Andersson, Jonna Sundling and Frida Karlsson were knocked out

The Swedish national ski team had its best WC ever.
Nevertheless, the medal heroes Jonna Sundling, Ebba Andersson and Frida Karlsson are snubbed at the Sports Gala.
– What else can we do?, says national team manager Anders Byström to VK.

Skiing World Cup 2023 in Planica became one big blue-yellow medal party. The Swedish national ski team won a total of 12 WC medals in Slovenia and that was above all Jonna Sundling, Ebba Andersson and Frida Karlsson which paved the way for the great success.

Skiing heroes are nobbed

Sundling won two World Cup golds in the sprint, Andersson dominated with two World Cup golds and two World Cup bronzes, while Karlsson won medals in all the races she competed in with two World Cup silvers and two World Cup bronzes. A magnificent display of our Swedish cross-country skiers before the eyes of the world.

But despite that, none of the WC heroes are nominated for any prize at the Sports Gala. Not a single one of the categories includes anyone from the national skiing team, even though they had their very best world championship ever and broke the record for the most medals.

Byström disappointed

The decision to ban all skiers has provoked strong reactions around our long country and now the national ski team is also reacting with full force.
– I’m not only surprised, but I’m also disappointed, says the national team manager Anders Byström in dedication to the newspaper Västerbottens-Kuriren.
– What else can we do?

The national team manager mainly highlights Jonna Sundling and what fantastic performances she has delivered in recent years. Without getting the appreciation she deserves at the Sports Gala.
– Jonna has won gold three championships in a row now. It is an incredible achievement and truly being the best when it comes to it. She does it in sprints too, with all the coincidences that exist and the pressure that entails, says Byström to the local newspaper.
