Cruel Narrator would have been “too exhausting” for players in the long run

In a recent interview with TheGamer, Amelia Tyler, the voice behind the narrator and game master of Baldur’s Gate 3, revealed that her original take on the narrator was a lot meaner.

She originally accompanied players on their journey, commenting on their actions with a degree of malice, much like Scar from The Lion King. She should watch the players fail and be amused by it.

Tyler explained to TheGamer:

The Early Access version was more like a dungeon master from the outside. The instructions I was given were “Remember Scar from The Lion King” – I enjoy watching you fail. This is going to be great.

Why was it changed? However, this vindictive approach was discarded in the game’s Early Access and replaced with a softer narrator. This narrator and game master felt less like a separate person challenging players and more like an inner voice in their heads.

Amelia Tyler emphasized:

[…] I’ve been on their minds their entire lives and I know how they think and I totally agree with every decision they make. […] Unless they roll a 1, then I’m merciless.[…].

The decision to soften the narrator’s cruelty allowed players to make their own choices without constant judgement. Amelia Tyler explained that she wanted the narrator to act like an inner voice in the players’ minds. Accepting their choices until critical failure occurs.

Tyler explained that the decision to make the change was also because the gruesome version would have been “too exhausting” for players over a long period of play and would have taken away from the fun.

Although the original gruesome version of the narrator didn’t come into play, players still have a chance to hear Tyler’s outtakes from the recording session on her TikTok channel. The outtakes take a humorous look behind the scenes.
