The mystery of the Venice canal – the water has turned green

The water flowing under the world-famous Rialto Bridge glows green. But no one knows what or who caused it – and now it must be investigated.

According to local media, one of the police’s theories is that it is a climate action. Environmental protection authorities must sample and examine the liquid that colored the water, the fire brigade says.

Not the first time

55 years ago, in 1968, the Argentinian artist Nicolas Garcia Uriburu painted the canal green during the Art Biennale in an action to raise environmental issues.

And last week, climate activists demonstrated by dyeing the water in the Fontana di Trevi black.
