The municipality’s sharp warning: The drinking water may run out

The municipalitys sharp warning The drinking water may run out

This weekend, SMHI issued yellow and orange warnings for high flows in several places in Norrland. The spring flood in the Kalix and Torne rivers has caused the water levels to rise significantly, which can lead to flooding in nearby areas.

– In many places it has culminated or is culminating right now. But there is still a lot of water in many watercourses, says SMHI’s hydrologist on duty Hugo Rudebeck told TT.

Kungsbacka municipality: “Now every drop counts”

On Tuesday, Kungsbacka municipality issued a warning to residents. There is a strained situation when it comes to drinking water in the municipality, and consumption is sometimes greater than production now that it is both hot and dry outside.

– Now every drop counts! Help us save water and maybe we can avoid an irrigation ban, says Catarina Sundberghead of operations Water Sewer Broadband and Project & Construction, in a press release.

Investigating whether you can borrow water

The drinking water available in Kungsbacka is taken from Bräkan and is a mixture of natural groundwater and water from lake Lygnern. The latter takes six weeks to infiltrate through Fjärå’s brackish water.

– We have to fill the water towers during the nights so that there is enough pressure in the fire hydrants for the Rescue Service. We also cannot take any amount of water from Lygnern because we have a water judgment to deal with, says Sundberg in the press release.

The municipality is now looking into whether there is an opportunity to borrow water from Mölndal municipality, but with the current weather, their needs will also be greater and there is therefore a risk that the water will not be enough.

This is how you save water

According to the municipality, there are several ways to save water:

  • Let the lawn turn yellow and avoid sprinklers. The grass recovers.
  • Avoid planting new lawns and instead plant during the autumn when there is more rainfall.
  • Water only if necessary and do so early in the morning, late in the evening or at night. Then the water does not evaporate as quickly.
  • Shorten your shower time and don’t leave the faucet running while brushing your teeth.
  • Fill a jug with water and leave it in the fridge. In this way, you don’t have to flush water while waiting for it to get cold in the tap.
