No cigarettes and no snuff under the lips – this applies to all employees within the municipality of Aarhus in Denmark. As of May 1, there is a total tobacco ban during working hours.

The municipal board has hammered it through.

– The municipality of Århus has a great responsibility to take the lead and signal that nicotine products are not part of the culture, says the municipality’s health officer Christian Budde (Venstre).

Exceptions apply to nicotine patches and other aids for smoking cessation. In addition, the 28,000 employees are allowed to smoke or snuff if they do so on unpaid breaks – as long as they are not in or near municipal buildings or wearing uniforms or other clothing for municipal work.

However, Christian Budde says that the municipality will not send out “nicotine police” to ensure that the decision is complied with, but that he trusts that everyone will stick to the rules.
